Though this may be a film about a postman whose hero is a football legend, it’s also very much a Ken Loach film. Loach is a genuine football fan, and in this comedy-drama, he observes Eric the Manchester postman, who has visions of Eric Cantona, the Manchester United forward, who has retired in 1997. Eric the postman’s wife has gone, he can’t control his wild stepsons, he suffers from panic attacks, and while life is crazy enough, he can’t even bring himself to face Lily, the woman he once loved thirty years ago. In desperate times, it takes a special friend to help a lost postman find his way, so Eric turns to his hero: footballing genius, philosopher, Eric Cantona, who appears to him every night and plays the trumpet…
